Roma Digital Heritage (Ágnes Daróczi’s archive)

Ágnes Daróczi’s VHS archive was digitized in the framework of the course The Politics of Representation in the Spring semester of 2018-2019. While the archive mostly contains footage recorded for the television magazine program Patrin, it also includes some documentaries and feature films. In addition to being digitized, the material was also organized and archived and tagged. The students digitizing the materials also held presentations on the material processed. Processing entailed the following information: program dates of production and broadcast, segments of the program (interviews, reports), short description of footage (location, date and time, participants, topic), keywords related to the content, and the name of the student who processed the material.

Students participating in the project: Attila Szilárd Barabás, Lili Bárdon, Virág Belányi, Daniella Bihon, Fanni Petra Brünner, Míra Dercze Németh, Noémi Farkas, Minka Fendle, Csenge Füzy, Anna Gergely, Alexandra Gróf, Gergely Máté Horváth, Réka Klein, Alexandra Zsanett Komlós, Nikoletta Kovács, György Láng, Boglárka Katalin Lestyán, Li Xi, Eszter Liktor, Dániel Bence Litványi, Eszter Maródi, Fanni Réka Meliska, Athena Larose Mercier, Rita Méri, Blanka Mészáros, Borbála Mink, Dominika Andrea Nagy, Péter Pesti, Laura Posgay, Bence Soma Sas, Sophie Natalie Schimke, Eufrozina Erzsébet Serdült, Anna Szalai, Ágnes Szilvia Varga, Kata Zsófia Varga, Zsuzsa Varga, Mónika Wintermans, Sára Zólyomi

How was the material archived?

Each VHS tape was given a number, and each number is linked to 3-4 files.

– 1 video file (the material digitized, which is not published here),

– one presentation or talk (these were presented by students in class),

– one Word file, a “summary” (a short description of the material),

– another Word file, an “essay” (summarizing the content of the given tape in essay form)

When a tape contains more than one program/broadcast, students digitized it either separately or combined, resulting in several video files in the latter case. Normally each student processed one tape, except when the material on the tape was unusually long. After the first 34 tapes had been processed, students did not receive further tapes in sequence at the ELTE Media Studio. The tapes skipped are to be digitized in a later phase. 47 of the 127 tapes have been digitized by the students to date. These included one damaged tape (no. 008) and several blank ones, and some tapes included irrelevant materials (films irrelevant to the archive), as noted by students in the summaries. Tape no. 029 was digitized twice by mistake, and both versions were kept in the interest of security. The outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic interrupted processing in spring 2020, but the work will hopefully resume shortly. The films have been digitized for research purposes. While their publication is not possible due to copyright concerns, they are accessible at the Media Studies Department of ELTE.

The following list includes processed tapes in a numerical order. As described above, each item number is followed by 1-4 files in pdf format, depending on the types of materials generated in the course of processing. One is the presentation of the video material in the form of a talk (talk), the second is a textual summary (summary), and the third covers the contents in essay form (essay).
